How to Record a Heart Sound Using Your Phone

Follow these simple steps to get a clear, accurate heart sound recording with BeatAware:

1Choose the Right Phone Setup

  • Use a modern smartphone (e.g., iPhone 13 or newer works best).
  • Remove your phone case only if it covers or muffles the microphone.

2Find the Right Spot on Your Chest

  • Use the diagram below (typically around the 4th intercostal space).
  • You can also test around other marked heart valve areas (aortic, tricuspid, mitral, pulmonary) to find the clearest sound for you.

3Position Your Phone Correctly

  • The bottom of the phone (where typically the mic is) should rest directly on your chest.
  • Hold the phone at a 90-degree angle to your chest so the screen faces up and you can still see it.
  • Don't press too hard—a gentle but firm contact is best.

4Clothing and Environment

  • It's best to record without thick clothing between your chest and the phone, but thin fabric is no problem.
  • Record in a quiet environment to minimize background noise.
  • And don't speak when recording.

5Start Recording

  • Once positioned, sit upright, hit Record and stay still for about 20 seconds.
  • After recording, BeatAware will analyze the sound and generate a detailed heart health report.

Having Trouble?

If the recording isn't being captured correctly or the sound is unclear:

  • Try adjusting the phone's position.
  • Make sure the mic isn't blocked and your phone is steady.
  • Ensure there's no loud noises and you're not speaking.

Remember, just like your doctor, BeatAware needs to be able to hear your heart.
